BJJ Book Club: Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro and Kevin Howell

BJJ Book Club: Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro and Kevin Howell

This is another collaboration between Kevin Howell and a high level BJJ black belt, Saulo Ribeiro, who is very respected within the industry. Howell is a black belt in his own right, and the book with Ribeiro was his first foray into BJJ Books. Many regard it as one of the best BJJ books out there. Saulo Ribeiro trained at the world famous Gracie Humaita camp under Royler Gracie, and that is where he garnered his fourth degree black belt. He has done everything from winning MMA matches to capturing BJJ titles in three different decades, but one of his greatest achievements has to be this book.

Jiu Jitsu University is a comprehensive guide for any BJJ athlete from white to black belt. You can use this book no matter how many years you have or haven’t been training, because it has breakdowns for everyone no matter what level you are at. That is why it has University in the title. Ribeiro and Howell give detailed instructions on over 200 techniques that come in at different levels in the same way University expands your mind to new concepts as you gain knowledge. There are moves for people that are anywhere from white to black belt, but this is not all the book has to offer.

He also gives each belt level a goal. He explains that at white belt you are just surviving. Ribeiro thinks of Jiu Jitsu as just as much mindset as it is a sport, so you have to have a certain practical mentality no matter what level you are at. For each belt he also assigns different areas you should work on like purple belt which he says is where your guard should become beyond proficient. The biggest ideal he tries to get across in this book is that everyone needs a good defense, because without a good defense you will not be able to ever work your offense.

The book has great pictures to breakdown every move, but if you skip ahead to sections for belts above your own you may not understand. The techniques in the later sections work of the foundation you should have already built, and without that foundation you may be missing major parts of a move they already expect you to know. Plus, it helps break common mistakes many people who train BJJ make in a section all about misconceptions. It is a wonder people have called this the black belt bible. The Jiu Jitsu University is worth checkin gout no matter what level you are at in your journey.
