Enhance Your Game: Put Yourself in Danger

A lot of the time, you will hear your instructor in BJJ tell you to be first and to work your game. While you do not want to fall into your opponent’s game, the bottom line is you also must be prepared for whatever your opponent can do to you. That is why you always have to be working on your weaknesses in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, because if you neglect certain positions you will find yourself in big trouble if someone ever gets you into those spots.

A lot of the time, you will hear your instructor in BJJ tell you to be first and to work your game. While you do not want to fall into your opponent’s game, the bottom line is you also must be prepared for whatever your opponent can do to you. That is why you always have to be working on your weaknesses in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, because if you neglect certain positions you will find yourself in big trouble if someone ever gets you into those spots.

That is why I am an advocate of positional drilling. If you are weak in side control from top or even bottom have yourself start from that position. Me, personally, I seen to have trouble maintaing the top from side control. It seems people can easily stuff me back into their guard or even sweep me from there. That is why a lot of times instead of starting from knees, I ask my opponent to let me start on top in side control or even have them start on top of me from that position.

This does not mean that you have to do a complete roll from the position either. In fact, it is almost recommended that you do not go through a full roll, because after you or your opponent have escaped the bad position you will most likely revert to what your game is. There should be certain guidelines for the roll. I generally go with the following rules. If the person on bottom can reestablish full guard or sweep then you go back to the beginning position. If the person on top needs to maintain position, but if they can take mount or back control you keep going. Also, if the person on top can submit then you start over as well.

These rules will obviously change in different positions especially if you are working on your guard work, because it is hard to go back to full guard when you start there. The rules can change depending on the way you want the roll to flow, but it is important that you are working on getting better at the position you are weak in so going through a full roll may not always be helpful. Also, it could be smart to put a smaller time limit on the roll. Maybe go for two minutes instead of six.

Positional rolling is never a fun prospect since more often than not one of the people participating is giving up a bad position which you are taught to never allow. Unfortunately, BJJ has to been seen as a defensive martial art as well as a sport, and on the street people are not going to always let you up or start from where you want. You have to be ready for everything, so enhance your game by putting yourself where you are weakest and work your way out of it.
