One of the great things about being part of the jiu-jitsu community is that you get the chance to make new friends. From the first day I met Phillip Brown at Gracie Barra Westchase in Houston, Texas it was obvious that he would help any fellow jiu-jitsu brother better their game as he trained with them. So much of what the higher belt ranks do on a daily basis is pass on the experience and lessons they have learned themselves. Phillip does not take his role as one of the "Captains" of the huge group of friends at Westchase lightly as he is always right there helping his fellow team mates in every single way he can. From helping to coach the kids, talking strategy with the guys, cheering from the sidelines or just having encouraging words when a friend is struggling, Phillip Brown will be there. He has made jiu-jitsu such a big part of his life, but what he may not understand is how much joy he brings others around him.
It was a pleasure to learn that our videographer was able to catch a new step in Phillip Brown's jiu-jitsu journey on the day that professor Ulpiano Malachias promoted him to purple belt rank. Hearing the words "he was my first student.." as professor talks about Phillip being his first student at the Gracie Barra Westchase location is very touching and just goes to show the heart of gold that lies above the waist of the black belt of Ulpiano Malachias.
