On August 1st and 2nd the Lubbock City Bank played host to the Sanshou National Championships and Team Trials. The event is used to select the National Sanshou Team in the 13th World Wushu Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia this November.
The rules of a Sanshou match are pretty simple. The fighter is awarded 2 points for a knockdown, kick to the head or trunk (body), pushing the opponent off of the platform, or a take down in which the aggressor remains standing. The fighter is awarded one point when he or she lands a strike with a fist, with successful leg kick, a takedown where both fighters are grounded, when the opponent is grounded for 3 seconds, or when both competitors fall off of the platform.
The men, women, and children that competed in the single elimination tournament from around the country flocked to the auditorium on the Texas Tech Campus in hopes of returning for the Pan American Championships later this year thus solidifying them as a part of the US National Team.
